DefinitionThe immaterial, living self — the seat of personality, emotion, and will. In Hebrew (nephesh) it can refer to the whole person or the inner life. In the NT (psuche) it refers to the soul as distinct from the body and spirit. The soul survives death and is of infinite worth — "What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"
