DefinitionFrom the Greek pentekostos, meaning "fiftieth." In the OT it was the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot), celebrated fifty days after Passover to mark the wheat harvest. In the NT, Pentecost became the defining moment of the church's birth — when the promised Holy Spirit was poured out on the 120 disciples in Jerusalem, inaugurating the age of the Spirit and the church age.
