DefinitionThe wooden cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified — the central event of human history. In the NT the cross is shorthand for the entire work of Christ's atoning death. Paul declared he would glory in nothing but the cross. Christ also used it as a metaphor for the daily self-denial required of His followers.
