DefinitionThe KJV translates the Hebrew Sheol and the Greek Hades as "hell" in most instances, along with gehenna. Sheol refers broadly to the realm of the dead — a shadowy underworld. In the NT the concept sharpens: hell is the place of conscious punishment for the wicked. The KJV also uses "hell" to translate gehenna, Christ's word for the place of final judgment.
