✦ Chapter Overview

First John 3 marvels at the Father's love that calls us children of God, noting that the world does not know us because it did not know Him, and declaring that when Christ appears we shall be like Him and see Him as He is, so that everyone with this hope purifies himself. It teaches that sin is lawlessness, that Christ was manifested to take away sins, and that no one who abides in Him sins, while distinguishing the children of God from the children of the devil by love for the brethren. The chapter closes with the command not to marvel if the world hates us, with the example of Cain, with the call to love in deed and truth, with assurance that God answers the prayers of those who keep His commandments, and with the testimony that He abides in us by the Spirit He has given us.

(1) Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

(2) Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
