II Chronicles 24:20
The Scripture
(20) And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.
Chapter overview (whole chapter)
Joash, guided by the priest Jehoiada, ordered the repair of the temple by collecting money from the people, and after Jehoiada's death Joash turned to idolatry and had Jehoiada's son Zechariah stoned to death for rebuking him. As judgment, a small Syrian army defeated Judah's much larger force, and Joash was later assassinated by his own servants in his bed.
