Zechariah 7 records that in the fourth year of King Darius men came from Bethel to ask the priests and prophets whether they should continue weeping and fasting in the fifth month as they had for many years. The Lord answers through Zechariah, asking whether their fasts were truly to Him or merely for themselves, and reminds them of the words the former prophets spoke when Jerusalem was still inhabited and at peace—calling for true justice, mercy, and compassion rather than oppression of the needy. The chapter closes by declaring that because they refused to hear and made their hearts like flint, the Lord scattered them among the nations with a whirlwind and laid their pleasant land desolate.

(1) And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, even in Chisleu;

(11) But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.

(14) But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.
