Psalm 136 is a liturgical psalm of thanksgiving whose every verse ends with the refrain, 'for his mercy endureth for ever,' rehearsing God's steadfast love from creation to redemption. It begins by praising the God of gods and Lord of lords who alone does great wonders, who made the heavens, the earth, the sun and moon, and the great lights. The psalm then recounts God's mighty acts—slaying Egypt's firstborn, bringing Israel out with a strong hand, dividing the Red Sea and the Jordan, overthrowing Pharaoh, leading His people through the wilderness, giving them the lands of Sihon and Og, and giving food to all flesh—closing with thanks to the God of heaven.
