The psalm portrays a man who has suffered greatly because of his wickedness, his wealth being taken away and his life marked by sorrow. It teaches that God judges the guilty and brings them to ruin, yet there is hope that God will deliver the righteous and restore them.
(1) A Song of degrees. Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:
(2) Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.
