John 5 records Jesus healing a man who had been infirm thirty-eight years at the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath, which provokes the Jews to persecute him, and he answers that his Father works and he works, making himself equal with God. He testifies that the Son can do nothing of himself but what he sees the Father do, that the Father has committed all judgment to the Son, and that the hour is coming when the dead will hear the Son's voice and rise to life or condemnation. The chapter closes with Jesus challenging the Jews' unbelief, stating that he does not receive testimony from men, that John bore witness to the truth, that the Scriptures testify of him, and that Moses, in whom they trust, will accuse them, for if they believed Moses they would believe him.
