The Scripture
(31) And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim.

Because of Israel's persistent idolatry and refusal to heed the prophets, the LORD allowed Shalmaneser king of Assyria to conquer Samaria and carry Israel away into captivity. The Assyrians then resettled the land with foreign peoples who adopted a mixed worship of the LORD alongside their own idols.
