(30) And the men of Babylon made Succothbenoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima,

Because of Israel's persistent idolatry and refusal to heed the prophets, the LORD allowed Shalmaneser king of Assyria to conquer Samaria and carry Israel away into captivity. The Assyrians then resettled the land with foreign peoples who adopted a mixed worship of the LORD alongside their own idols.
