The Scripture

(5) And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.
Chapter overview (whole chapter)

First Samuel 21 shows the fleeing David arriving at Nob, where the priest Ahimelech-frightened by his sudden arrival-gives him the consecrated showbread to eat since there is no common bread, after confirming his men's purity. David also takes Goliath's sword, which had been kept behind the ephod. He then flees to Achish king of Gath, but when the servants recognize him, David feigns madness-scrabbling on the doors and drooling on his beard-so that Achish dismisses him as a madman.
