First Samuel 21 shows the fleeing David arriving at Nob, where the priest Ahimelech—frightened by his sudden arrival—gives him the consecrated showbread to eat since there is no common bread, after confirming his men's purity. David also takes Goliath's sword, which had been kept behind the ephod. He then flees to Achish king of Gath, but when the servants recognize him, David feigns madness—scrabbling on the doors and drooling on his beard—so that Achish dismisses him as a madman.

(1) Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?
