John 8 opens with the scribes and Pharisees bringing a woman caught in adultery to Jesus, testing him so they might accuse him, and he stoops to write on the ground and replies, 'He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone,' after which her accusers leave and he tells her to go and sin no more. Jesus then declares himself the light of the world and that whoever follows him will not walk in darkness, and he warns the Pharisees that they will die in their sins unless they believe that he is the Christ. The chapter closes with a heated exchange in which Jesus testifies that Abraham rejoiced to see his day, declares 'Before Abraham was, I am,' and the Jews take up stones to cast at him, but he hides himself and passes out of the temple.
