The Scripture
(28) This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

The Israelites are instructed to count their numbers and to set apart the tribe of Levi for their service. The chapter also records the division of the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh and the appointment of leaders for each tribe.
