Mark 8 opens with Jesus feeding four thousand from seven loaves in the wilderness, after which he warns the disciples against the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod, lamenting their slow understanding. At Bethsaida he heals a blind man in stages, first seeing men like trees and then seeing clearly. The chapter reaches its climax at Caesarea Philippi, where Peter confesses Jesus as the Christ, and Jesus begins to teach that the Son of Man must suffer, be rejected, killed, and rise again, rebuking Peter's resistance with the stern words about minding the things of men. It closes with his call to deny oneself, take up the cross, and not be ashamed of him, for whoever saves his life will lose it and whoever loses it for the gospel's sake will save it.
