Chapter overview (whole chapter)

Jeremiah 41 opens with Ishmael son of Nethaniah murdering Gedaliah, the governor set over Judah, along with the Jews and Chaldeans present at Mizpah. He then slaughters most of eighty pilgrims from Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria, sparing only ten who bargain with hidden stores of grain. The chapter closes with Johanan rescuing the captives Ishmael had taken, while Ishmael escapes to the Ammonites and the frightened remnant withdraws toward Egypt.
