The Scripture
(5) And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant.

Moses and Aaron go to Pharaoh with a request for the Israelites to be released from slavery, but Pharaoh refuses and sends the elders to hear his decree. The chapter records the Israelites' continued hardship and the increasing anger of God, setting the stage for a stronger demand.
