The Scripture
(16) And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations; Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari: and the years of the life of Levi were an hundred thirty and seven years.

Moses and Aaron go to Pharaoh with a request for the Israelites to be released from slavery, but Pharaoh refuses and sends the elders to hear his decree. The chapter records the Israelites' continued hardship and the increasing anger of God, setting the stage for a stronger demand.
