Ecclesiastes 1:5
The Scripture
Chapter overview (whole chapter)
Ecclesiastes 1 introduces the Preacher, the son of David king in Jerusalem, who declares that all is vanity, for one generation passes and another comes while the earth abides forever. He reflects on the ceaseless cycles of the sun, wind, and rivers, and on the weariness of human labor from which the eye is not satisfied with seeing nor the ear filled with hearing, since there is no new thing under the sun. The chapter closes with the Preacher's testimony that he gained more wisdom than all before him in Jerusalem, yet perceived that seeking much wisdom and knowledge is vexation of spirit, for in much wisdom is much grief and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
