The Scripture
(25) And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.

David was anointed king over the house of Judah at Hebron, while Abner made Saul's son Ish-bosheth king over Israel, setting the two houses at odds. War broke out between their forces at Gibeon, where Abner killed Asahel, Joab's brother, in the ensuing conflict.
