The Scripture
(28) Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the LORD.
Chapter overview (whole chapter)
Because of Israel's persistent idolatry and refusal to heed the prophets, the LORD allowed Shalmaneser king of Assyria to conquer Samaria and carry Israel away into captivity. The Assyrians then resettled the land with foreign peoples who adopted a mixed worship of the LORD alongside their own idols.
