The Scripture
(16) And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
Chapter overview (whole chapter)
Israel was defeated by the Philistines and brought the ark of the covenant into battle for protection, but the Philistines captured the ark and killed Eli's sons Hophni and Phinehas. When Eli heard the news he fell backward and died, and his daughter-in-law, giving birth, named her son Ichabod because the glory had departed from Israel.
