(5) Reuben, the eldest son of Israel: the children of Reuben; Hanoch, of whom cometh the family of the Hanochites: of Pallu, the family of the Palluites:
Chapter overview (whole chapter)
In this chapter Moses commands the Israelites to be numbered so that each tribe may receive its proper portion of land, and the tribe of Levi is set apart for service. The tribe of Judah is counted among the people, and the Levites are assigned to the priestly duties. The purpose of the census is to ensure each tribe receives its inheritance as God has promised.
