Chapter overview (whole chapter)
Numbers 21 begins with Israel defeating the Canaanite king Arad and destroying his cities at Hormah after vowing to the Lord, but the people soon grow impatient and speak against God and Moses, for which the Lord sends fiery serpents; those bitten are healed when they look at the bronze serpent Moses lifts up on a pole. The chapter then traces Israel's journey around Edom, recording the song at the well and the stops from Oboth to the valley of Zered. It closes with Israel's victories over Sihon king of the Amorites and Og king of Bashan, after which Israel took possession of their lands.
