Matthew 13 opens with Jesus teaching from a boat in parables, beginning with the Sower and explaining to his disciples why he speaks this way. He adds the parables of the tares, the mustard seed, the leaven, the hidden treasure, the pearl, and the net. The chapter closes with Jesus returning to Nazareth, where the people take offense at his humble origins and he does few miracles because of their unbelief.
