Luke 3:8
The Scripture
Chapter overview (whole chapter)
Luke 3 opens by dating John's ministry to the fifteenth year of Tiberius, then describes John preaching a baptism of repentance in the region of Jordan, fulfilling Isaiah's voice crying in the wilderness. He warns the crowds to bear fruits of repentance, counsels the multitudes, publicans, and soldiers in practical ethics, and denies being the Christ while promising that the coming one will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. The chapter closes with Jesus's baptism, when the heaven opens and the Spirit descends as a dove and a voice declares him the beloved Son, followed by his genealogy traced back through David, Abraham, and Adam to God.
