Luke 13 opens with Jesus responding to news of Galileans killed by Pilate, warning that all people must repent or likewise perish, and reinforcing the call with the Parable of the Barren Fig Tree, which speaks of God's patience and coming judgment. He then heals a woman who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years on the Sabbath, drawing criticism from the synagogue ruler and using the occasion to expose the hypocrisy of those who care for their animals on the Sabbath but object to human healing. The chapter closes with Jesus teaching the Parables of the Mustard Seed and Leaven, warning that the door to salvation is narrow, and lamenting over Jerusalem's persistent rejection of God's messengers.
