The Scripture

(16) That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.
Chapter overview (whole chapter)

Joshua 3 records Israel's crossing of the Jordan, as the people set out from Shittim and follow the priests carrying the ark of the covenant, keeping a respectful distance since they have not traveled this way before. When the priests' feet touch the brim of the overflowing Jordan at harvest time, the waters from above pile up in a heap and the lower waters are cut off, leaving dry ground. The priests bearing the ark stand firm in the middle of the riverbed while all Israel passes over on dry ground opposite Jericho.
