The Scripture
(6) And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.
Chapter overview (whole chapter)
Joshua 20 records the Lord's command to appoint cities of refuge for anyone who kills another unintentionally, so the manslayer can flee from the avenger of blood. The chapter names the six designated cities-Kedesh, Shechem, and Hebron west of the Jordan, and Bezer, Ramoth, and Golan to the east. They were set apart for all Israelites and for foreigners living among them, so that an accidental killer could find refuge until he stood trial before the congregation.
