(13) Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so was the king's manner toward all that knew law and judgment:

The chapter opens with King Xerxes issuing a decree that anyone who opposes him will be executed, and Mordecai, a Jewish official, warns his people to obey. Esther, a cousin of Mordecai, volunteers to deliver the message to the king, showing courage and loyalty to her people.
