✦ Chapter Overview

Amos 3 opens with the Lord declaring to the whole family He brought up from Egypt that He will punish them for all their iniquities, because among all the families of the earth He has known only them. Through a series of rhetorical questions about cause and effect—whether two can walk together unless agreed, or a lion roar without prey—the prophet establishes that disaster does not come to a city unless the Lord has done it, and that He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets. The chapter closes with the Lord commanding a proclamation in the house of Jacob that He will visit Israel's transgressions, cut off the horns of the altar at Bethel, and smite the winter and summer houses and the houses of ivory.
