Second Thessalonians 3 opens with Paul requesting the church's prayers for the spread of the gospel and for deliverance from those who oppose it, expressing his confidence that God will strengthen and protect the faithful Thessalonians. He then turns to a pressing practical problem in the congregation — idle members who had stopped working, possibly because they believed the Lord's return was imminent — and commands firmly that anyone unwilling to work should not eat, reminding them of his own example of laboring night and day to avoid being a burden. Paul closes by instructing the church to gently discipline the disorderly so they will be restored, and pronounces a blessing of peace on the congregation.
