The Scripture
(31) But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.

David was anointed king over the house of Judah at Hebron, while Abner made Saul's son Ish-bosheth king over Israel, setting the two houses at odds. War broke out between their forces at Gibeon, where Abner killed Asahel, Joab's brother, in the ensuing conflict.
