The Scripture
(11) Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.

Ahithophel counseled Absalom to pursue and kill David immediately, but Hushai persuaded Absalom to delay by gathering a larger army first, secretly giving David time to escape across the Jordan. When Ahithophel saw his counsel rejected, he went home and hanged himself.
