(36) But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

Hezekiah began a righteous reign over Judah, removing idols and trusting in the LORD as Assyria under Shalmaneser conquered Samaria. When Sennacherib king of Assyria invaded Judah, his officer the Rabshakeh stood before Jerusalem's walls mocking God and demanding surrender.
