The Scripture
(5) Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years.

Because of Israel's persistent idolatry and refusal to heed the prophets, the LORD allowed Shalmaneser king of Assyria to conquer Samaria and carry Israel away into captivity. The Assyrians then resettled the land with foreign peoples who adopted a mixed worship of the LORD alongside their own idols.
