The Scripture
(17) In the nine and thirtieth year of Azariah king of Judah began Menahem the son of Gadi to reign over Israel, and reigned ten years in Samaria.

Azariah (Uzziah) reigned in Judah but was struck with leprosy for entering the temple, while Israel saw a rapid and violent succession of kings—Zachariah, Shallum, Menahem, Pekahiah, and Pekah—many of whom were murdered by their successors. During this period Tiglath-pileser of Assyria began carrying Israelites into captivity.
