The Scripture
(8) Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

Israel was defeated by the Philistines and brought the ark of the covenant into battle for protection, but the Philistines captured the ark and killed Eli's sons Hophni and Phinehas. When Eli heard the news he fell backward and died, and his daughter-in-law, giving birth, named her son Ichabod because the glory had departed from Israel.
