The Scripture
(6) And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.

Israel was defeated by the Philistines and brought the ark of the covenant into battle for protection, but the Philistines captured the ark and killed Eli's sons Hophni and Phinehas. When Eli heard the news he fell backward and died, and his daughter-in-law, giving birth, named her son Ichabod because the glory had departed from Israel.
