The Scripture

(22) Then answered all the wicked men and men of Belial, of those that went with David, and said, Because they went not with us, we will not give them ought of the spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.
Chapter overview (whole chapter)

First Samuel 30 records David and his men returning to Ziklag on the third day to find the Amalekites have raided the south, burned the city, and carried off their wives and families. David, grieving and nearly stoned by his own men, strengthens himself in the Lord and pursues, guided by an abandoned Egyptian servant to the Amalekite camp, where they recover everything and everyone. David divides the spoil equally between those who fought and the two hundred who stayed behind with the baggage-a statute in Israel-and sends gifts to the elders of Judah in the towns he and his men frequented.
