I Kings 12:13
The Scripture
Chapter overview (whole chapter)
First Kings 12 recounts the kingdom's division, as Rehoboam succeeds Solomon and the people, led by Jeroboam, ask him to lighten the heavy yoke his father imposed. Rejecting the elders' counsel to serve the people, Rehoboam follows the young men's harsh advice and promises to discipline them with scorpions, prompting ten tribes to rebel and make Jeroboam their king. To keep Israel from returning to Jerusalem to worship, Jeroboam sets up golden calves at Bethel and Dan, makes priests from common people, and institutes a rival feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, devising it from his own heart.
