I Chronicles 19:7
The Scripture
Chapter overview (whole chapter)
First Chronicles 19 records how David, intending to show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash king of Ammon after his father's death, sends servants to comfort him, but Ammonite princes convince Hanun the men are spies. Hanun shames David's servants by shaving half their beards and cutting their garments, and when the Ammonites realize they have become odious to David, they hire Syrian chariots and horsemen for war. David's commander Joab defeats the Ammonites and Syrians in battle, and after the Syrians regroup, David himself gathers all Israel, crosses the Jordan, and routs them so thoroughly that they make peace and refuse to help Ammon anymore.
