First Chronicles 10 recounts the death of Saul in the battle against the Philistines on Mount Gilboa, where his sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua are killed and the archers wound Saul. Rather than be abused by the uncircumcised, Saul falls on his own sword after his armor-bearer refuses to kill him, and the Philistines strip his armor and fasten his body to the wall of Beth-shan. The chapter closes by attributing Saul's death to his unfaithfulness in forsaking the Lord's word and consulting a medium, so the Lord killed him and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

(1) Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.
